Cost Index 2.2

The Cost Index application is a tool developed by airline pilots to assist airline and corporate aircraft operators in optimizing operational efficiency. It facilitates significant cost savings by enabling pilots to input cruise flight conditions, after which sophisticated algorithms compute the most economical cruise speed, tailored to specific aircraft models and operational cost parameters.

Pilots have the flexibility to modify variables such as flight level, wind conditions, temperature, aircraft weight, and sector cruise distance to identify the optimal indicated airspeed and/or Mach number. The app can display the time difference between the optimal cruise speed and the minimum time speed, allowing users to adjust speeds directly or modify the acceptable time deviation. This feature supports operational decisions prioritizing on-time arrivals when necessary.

The "Cruise Speed" and "Detail" pages provide customizable information displays for operators. With over 150 parameters configurable, operators can tailor these views to exclude sensitive operational data, while an administrator mode grants full access for operational planning and cost analysis.

For sectors approaching the aircraft’s maximum range, the app calculates a speed optimized for minimum fuel consumption, accounting for wind effects, resulting in more efficient cruising than standard long-range speeds.

When turbulence data indicates buffet margins, a toggle button appears to increase buffet margins from 1.3g to 1.6g, enhancing safety margins during turbulent conditions.

The "Level Change" feature offers valuable decision support by comparing costs, fuel burn, and time for different flight levels relative to the current level. Additionally, it provides wind profile data needed to achieve cost parity between levels. The recommended optimum flight level—typically the highest safe altitude—is highlighted distinctly for quick reference.

The "Downloads" section manages data updates, which occur automatically every 24 hours but can be manually triggered. Dismissible reminders on the app badge and interface inform pilots of outdated data. A message area allows administrators to communicate updates or provide performance tips aimed at encouraging operational efficiencies.

The "Settings" tab is restricted to administrator accounts and facilitates updating operating costs and customizing display options.

The application includes four sample datasets with fictitious data for training or demonstration purposes. Compatible devices encompass iPad, iPad Retina, iPhone (including Retina 3.5-inch and 4-inch models), and iPod Touch.
